Bravely Building a Friendly, Socialistic Society While in the Cross Hairs of Imperialism

Karachi, Pakistan, May 2013: Pakistani trade unionists and leftists hold a determined rally in defence of the DPRK. Speakers and slogans at the rally not only hailed North Korea’s struggle against imperialist aggression but pointed to its socialist foundations. Unlike in imperialist countries like Australia, where anti-communist media propaganda has at the moment bred popular suspicion of North Korea, North Korea’s defiance of imperialist threats has won it much sympathy from the masses of the many ex-colonial countries (like Pakistan) still suffering under neocolonial domination. Politically aware sections of the masses in “Third World” capitalist countries like Pakistan are also aware that despite the DPRK being ground down by sanctions and imperialist encirclement, workers in socialistic North Korea enjoy more humane working conditions and better access to health care, education and housing than they do in their own countries. A pro-working-class, DPRK solidarity movement needs to be built in Australia by cutting through the anti-DPRK propaganda and by pointing to the pro-working class character of the DPRK state.

As my trip to North Korea approached, I started to feel excited. I was going to see for myself what this country was really like – this country that has been so vilified by the mainstream Western media.
I will not pretend that I went to North Korea with no pre-conceived ideas. This is unlike the Western capitalist media who pretend to be “unbiased”, “neutral” observers who are supposedly “shocked” when they go to North Korea for an “investigative” report. Before I went to North Korea – or, as it is properly known, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea – I understood it to be a workers state. By this I understood that capitalist rule had been smashed in North Korea and a state defending socialistic, collectivised property to be ruling there. This represented a huge step forward for social progress and for the global struggle of socialism against capitalism. However, the way that the socialistic system was run in the DPRK was somewhat deformed from the way a truly socialist order would be run because the administration of the country was monopolised by a bureaucratic layer that kept the masses out of real decision making power. Nevertheless, the DPRK was courageously holding out for socialism in the face of both economic sanctions and the most intense military threats from U.S. imperialism and its South Korean capitalist and Japanese and Australian imperialist allies. I understood that this intense pressure on the DPRK brought hardship to the North Korean people and made the bureaucratic deformations to its socialistic system more significant. Yet despite these difficulties, as a workers state embodying great gains for the exploited and oppressed of the whole globe, the DPRK must be unconditionally defended from military or propaganda attacks by capitalist countries and from external or internal forces seeking to undermine socialistic rule there. I met relatives for the first time at Incheon Airport, South Korea. As we travelled towards Seoul, I looked out the car window. Out there were signs of highly urbanised life: tall, twenty storey buildings clumped together in the distance and we hadn’t even reached Seoul, the capital city, just yet. I remember being eager to see every aspect of South Korea, especially the ‘development’ of an ‘Asian Tiger Economy’ under capitalism. THE STRUGGLE FOR THE LEFT TO TAKE AN ANTI-IMPERIALIST POSITION ON THE SYRIA CONFLICT
July 29 2012 – The imperialists are in a de facto war with Syria. From massively arming the Syrian “Rebels” to providing them with money and military intelligence to organising foreign mercenaries to fight for them to having special forces assist these “Rebels” to the media’s overwhelming propaganda campaign against the Syrian government, the imperial powers are doing everything short of a full-scale invasion to ensure regime change in Syria. In such a clash between imperialism and a small, ex-colony, the position of leftists should be clear. As Russian revolutionary leader Lenin stated in his Marxist classic, Socialism and War, written in 1915 (i.e. written in the days of Tsarist Russia prior to the Russian Revolution):
… if tomorrow, Morocco were to declare war on France, India on England, Persia or China on Russia, and so forth, those would be “just”, “defensive” wars, irrespective of who attacked first; and every Socialist would sympathise with the victory of the oppressed, dependent, unequal states against the oppressing, slaveowning, predatory `great’ powers.
That means that we must today stand for the defence of Syria against the predatory NATO “great” powers and their proxies within Syria. This is the position that we in Trotskyist Platform fight for. This is why we have joined in solidarity with demonstrations called by those Syrian migrants who are opposed to imperialism and its “Rebels.” We do this while recognising, in the spirit of Lenin, that while we are in a temporary alliance with the capitalist, Baathist government in Syria against the imperialists and their allies, we should maintain our strict political independence from the Baathists and should continue to stand for the development of an independent, anti-imperialist, working class movement in Syria.
Do you hate capitalism? Well if you truly do then you must take a stand with the socialistic DPRK against the intense threats it is facing from capitalist states.

The governments of the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Australia have launched a volley of threats against North Korea. It is only support for the DPRK from the Peoples Republic of China that has thus far prevented an all out U.S.-led invasion of North Korea.
Let this serve as both a warning and a reprimand to those on the left who still harbour any illusions about Western imperialist-backed regime change: a child’s ball haunts a deserted and gutted out street in Sirte after the horrific onslaught of 415 “Key” NATO airstrikes and untold indiscriminate shelling by the NATO-backed “rebels”. The few residents that had begun to return, the UK’s The Daily Mail reported in late October, stared “in disbelief at the ruins of their homes, many of which seem to have been looted by the rebels”. A 26-year-old engineer said: ‘Our homes have been wiped out and our friends and family lie dead in the streets.’ His friend added: ‘Look at this place, at the bodies/ It is an act of vengeance.’ A third resident declared: ‘The war is not over yet. This war has only just begun.’

October 24 – Yesterday, the forces installed into power in Libya by their imperial puppet masters hailed the “Liberation” of the country. Yet their cold-blooded slaughter of former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, after he was captured alive only highlights that these new rulers are cut-throats whose claims to have fought for “democracy” are utter lies. Gaddafi was only one of hundreds and more likely thousands of supporters of the old order who have been executed by NATO’s “rebels.” Today, even the pro-Western Human Rights Watch was compelled to announce that the pro-NATO National Transitional Council (NTC) forces had massacred 52 Gaddafi supporters in the Libyan city of Sirte. The victims were found with their hands bound behind their backs and dumped on the lawn of the seaside Mahari Hotel.
